FOSS stands for Free & Open Source Software. FOSS is social movement and has a deeply philosophical meaning. A Free Software would be free to use/share/adapt/improve according to the Free Software Philosophy. Open Source is a development methodology under which the developer/creator/programmer of a software makes the source code of a software readily available for further revision or usage by any party interested. Futcha is a contemporary Hindi slang predominantly used in the city of New Delhi (capital of India, if ya didn’t know), which means a “Fresher”. It is generally used by Senior Batch students to address the new admittees into the college.

FOSS Futcha, thus, means a Fresher in FOSS.

/mission/
I have just recently converted to FOSS full time when I installed Ubuntu at my home PC on the 3rd of June this year (my 23rd b’day!). Since, then I have been having a tough time getting used to FOSS. The process is difficult because to start afresh you have to unlearn a lot of things and that is not easy. Through this blog, I will chronicle my experiences with everything-FOSS including Linux and FOSS applications.

/why microblog?/
That was a tough choice. With the likes of Twitter already present, why do I need to create a microblog to tackle the issue? After long deliberation, I decided that since I use my Twitter account for general purpose, it would be unfair with my FOSS exploits to mix them in that crowd. To bring specificness in my content, I decided to go for a new microblog. It also helps that in a microblog I can also post longer posts without any issues and the fact that I still don’t have the hang of Twitter.

/how can you help?/

  1. Teach me FOSS! :D (for free obv.)
  2. The content of this blog might be erroneous owing to my limited exposure to FOSS. Help me refactor content.
  3. Become a FOSS Futcha (or a FOSS Guru for that matter) and share your exploits.
  4. Read what I have been through.
  5. Ask people to read it.
  6. Develop FOSS
  7. Use FOSS
  8. Be Imaginative :D
